Before I spent all those years in China, I was in a band called Ndugu. It was great, weâd get together often, not the weekly rehearsals that most bands do, but two or three times a week, and more.

Now that I hear the recordings we make it occurs to me that we were pretty good!

Iâm not sure what the other two guys are doing now, but would really like to get Ndugu going again. The easiest way would probably be to give James and Luke a call and get them over, but have lost their phone numbers. :(

On the off chance someone knows who they are Iâve made this video and post.

The far more likely option is starting a new band!

So if youâre a musician in Sydney and are interested in this kind of music, let me know. I play keyboard and bass, and I hope you can get some idea of what musical styles Iâm into from this blog and YouTube channel.

My first musical video since arriving in Sydney! Exciting!

I just wanted to do something simple to start out with. I've got a lot of instruments and equipment that I haven't used in a long time, so this is just something to test that everything still works and I know how to use it.

For the record, I used a DIgi 002 rack to record everything on Pro Tools LE (not sure what version...

An SM57 to record everything acoustic...

The "family" are a Hofna acoustic guitar (that's not a spelling mistake), a GIbson Les Paul 100, Fender Jazz bass, Roland XP-30, and a  Kawai upright piano. The Les Paul went through a Line 6 pocket pod.

"Footage" was shot on a casio stills digital camera (sorry, can't find it so not sure of the model) and put together on iMovie.

Aika and I are heading home soon! After 4 years in Shanghai, I'm going back to Sydney for good, and she's starting a life in a new home.

The upshot of this is that I've already sent some musical equipment back and am not able to use my microphones, or most of my musical equipment. This track was arranged on GarageBand. The instruments and loops all came with it.

Whenever you get a flash of inspiration, you should always record it because you never know when you'll get another. I was in Suzhou a few weeks ago with some friends (anyone with my facebook should have a look at my profile to see photos) and I heard something similar to this tune in a music shop. In actual fact it might have been completely different, but within a few minutes of leaving this tune was stuck in my head so in any case it was inspired by the few minutes in the music shop that we had. I wrote down the tune in a kind of shorthand on my iPod touch. (For everyone musically inclined who can't read, I recommend it for exactly this purpose; you never know when something pops in your head and you want to record it somehow.)

I'm not too keen on this arrangement but I think I'd better get it down somehow before I forget it. Perhaps when I get to Sydney I'll do something better, but I always think that if you should just keep yourself "in practice" when it come to music. - You can't just wait until you have something perfect, just get it out there.

Anyway, hope you like it. Faridabad gets its name from a place in India. I pressed "Random Article" in Wikipedia and that's what came up.

This one is a bit rough, but I hope you get the idea how the full band with five piece brass section version of Faridabad will sound.

There are only two guitars, but I couldn't be bothered miming the other one, so you'll just have to imagine it!

I think this would sound good  as a string trio or quartet but until I get my violin/viola/cello skills up to scratch this will have to do! Melodica and acoustic guitar don't sound too bad though.

Ed originally requested "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" by Sparks, and if you have a listen to that wacky tune, you'll know how relieved he was that I had another suggestion. Not that it's a bad song, it just would have taken a lot of time for me to work out all the changes... I would have needed a calculator to work out the time signature.

Don't know much about Sparks other than what Wikipedia tells me... This track is apparently off "Kimono My House"... they were formed by some brothers...

I'm always worried when I do obscure bands that some die hard fans will be disappointed at how I've crucified their favourite song... if anyone finds this version insulting to the original, I can only apologise and say that I didn't mean it!

I DID cut it down a bit, I couldn't keep it going for as long as Sparks do in their original version.

Aika and I went to the Shanghai Natural Museum (äæèçåçé) the other day. I took some photos, and rather than let them fester on my hard drive I threw this together.

Is it a little nerdy to do a review of a museum? I've always been interested in dinosaurs, fossils and ancient things like that so I hope that you don't mind.

If you couldn't be bothered watching, just know that my opinion of the place is that the dinosaur part is cool, the stuffed animals and anthropological sections aren't.

I quite liked making this; I hope to do it more often. I realize that it's a bit crappy but I hope to get better. Please, if you have any suggestions on how I can suck less please let me know. I think the most obvious mistake I made was not having enough photos... That's why there's such a long blank screen at the end.

Umishou is an anime series abiut a high school swim team. It's one of those cute comedies that the Japanese do so well.

In one part, the team are at a swimming carnival, and some of their teammates are losing. The boys start chanting a tune, and dancing around to get the girls to swim better... it kinda sounded like this. In actual fact it might have sounded nothing like this, I don't remember exactly!

This would be good with a band, but I'm not sure what would go in the bit where I'm talking. If you have any ideas, let me know.
